The book discusses the application of modern methods of surface analysis: scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microprobe (XMP), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger spectroscopy (AES), secondary ions mass spectroscopy (SIMS) — for a comprehensive description of modern and historical objects of ceramic art. The physical basis of these methods, their analytical capabilities and limitations of application are discussed.

A number of examples of comprehensive studies of raw materials for the production of porcelain paste and pigments for porcelain painting used in modern porcelain production, as well as historical and modern samples of ceramic art: tiles, modern and historical porcelain and faience.
